A Life In Music

I began my musical journey at the Music School of Bonn in Germany, immersed from an early age in the European classical tradition. After moving to the UK, I continued my piano studies under the late Peter Pettinger before becoming a student of the renowned pianist and pedagogue Peter Bithell.I’m proud to belong to a teaching tradition that can be traced directly back to Ludwig van Beethoven, through an unbroken line of master pianists and pedagogues. My teacher, Peter Bithell, studied with Maria Curcio, the renowned pupil of Artur Schnabel, who was himself taught by Theodor Leschetizky - a student of Carl Czerny, Beethoven’s own protégé.This lineage represents the Viennese Classical school of piano playing, known for its emphasis on clarity of expression, structural understanding, and deep musical integrity. It carries a legacy of thoughtful interpretation, technical finesse, and a profound respect for the score - qualities that quietly underpin my teaching. In the 1990s, I stepped into the world of rock and pop, touring the UK as part of a signed band and working as a Jazz & Latin session musician. This hands-on experience gave me a broad perspective on music-making beyond the classical world. In 2000, I was awarded two Licentiate diplomas (LRSM) in piano performance and teaching from the Royal Schools of Music - rigorous, masters-level qualifications that underpin my approach as a teacher. I began offering private piano tuition to both children and adults, alongside my role as a peripatetic music tutor in the music department at York St John University. My creative path evolved again in 2009 when I began working professionally as a composer. A year later, I became an Apple-certified Logic Pro Instructor, and in 2014 I founded my own music production company. Today, my compositions are used by major clients including the BBC, and reach thousands of filmmakers around the world.Composing and producing music keeps me busy - but not too busy to share what I love most: the piano. Teaching lets me step away from the screen, return to the keys, and help others fall in love with music in their own way.

Seb doesn’t just teach piano - he inspires. He connects with students on a deeper level, helping them discover what truly brings them joy in music and creativity as a whole.Yes, you can follow the traditional grades system and earn those qualifications along the way. Seb is more than equipped for that - in fact, he’s overqualified. But that’s just the beginning.I’m living proof that Seb’s impact goes far beyond technique and exams. From a young age, he gave me a space where I felt excited, free, and safe to explore music on my own terms. That feeling has never left me.Seb helped me see the piano not just as an instrument, but as a gateway - to music theory, to composition, and to emotional expression. He made it make sense. He made it mine.Today, I’m 27 and successfully working in music and audio production - a career I never would have pursued without Seb. He unlocked something in me that no one else could. He gave me confidence, not just in my musical ability, but in who I am.It’s no exaggeration to say Seb changed my life through his piano lessons. And I believe he can do the same for your child. With Seb, your child won’t just learn to play - they’ll grow as a person.

The (Not So) Small Print

Where do lessons take place?
Lessons take place in your home (around Lewes) or at the Rankin studio in central Lewes.
How much do lessons cost?
Lessons are £50 for a 60 minute session.
Do you offer shorter lessons?
No. An hour gives you or your child the time to settle in, focus, and make real progress. It allows us to explore technique, repertoire, and musicianship in depth - and for me to see that new skills have truly taken root.
Do I need to stay during my child’s lesson?
Whether teaching from my studio or at your home, a responsible guardian needs to be present for safeguarding, insurance and any medical needs.
Do you offer a discounted first lesson?
Yes - I offer a 50% discount for the initial lesson to see if it’s a good fit for both parties.
Whether you're starting from scratch or returning to the piano after a break, each session is one-to-one and tailored to you.
